Purification Methods The salt first appears as oily droplets which slowly settle and crystallise. After 12hours the supernatant is clear. Stirring and scratching the flask containing the filtrate brings out additional crystals (0.3-1g) if the salt is kept at 20o for 12hours. Filter it off at room temperature, wash with 3 x 5mL of ice-cold 90% EtOH, then 5mL of absolute EtOH and dry it in a vacuum desiccator (Drierite or CaCl2) for 16-30hours. The hexahydrate (plates) is converted to the tetrahydrate salt (needles) in a vacuum at -10o.
